Five small businesses recognized by SCORE in Chester and Delaware counties

Five companies from across the region were recognized in SCORE Chester and Delaware Counties’ annual Small Business Achievement Awards for their ability to “survive and thrive” in a challenging economy.

The awards dinner on June 16 marked a return to an in-person event for the awards, recognizing entrepreneurs who start or grow their businesses while working with SCORE.

Each year since 2010, SCORE in Chester and Delaware counties has recognized owners and entrepreneurs who have reached out to SCORE for mentoring and who have demonstrated vision, innovation and performance to support the local economy and small business community.

MERCEDES DIAZ

Mercedes Diaz, SCORE Mentor and SCORE Chapter Chair for Chester and Delaware counties, opened this year’s program, which was held at the Concord Country Club in Glen Mills. Diaz highlighted the entrepreneurs’ ability to “overcome significant challenges, but also a strong determination, creativity, innovation, collaboration and sheer determination just to succeed.”

This year’s award winners are a mix of established firms and start-ups, and represent different segments including: security in property management, a collaborative art studio for all generations, global maritime education, innovation in physical therapy and an expanding digital marketing company despite inflation and Economic crisis.

• Its mission and unique value proposition

• How business is today

SCORE is a non-profit national organization of business volunteers dedicated to providing free consulting and educational services to small businesses. SCORE volunteers are business professionals mentoring entrepreneurs planning to start a small business or small business owners seeking assistance in solving business problems.

According to Diaz, SCORE helped create more than 25,000 new businesses and 96,000 new jobs nationwide in 2021. She added that 61% of customers say they have increased sales with the help of SCORE.

Nationally, SCORE has been helping small business owners for 60 years, while SCORE’s Chester and Delaware counties office has been active since 1985 and has more than 100 volunteers providing mentoring and business training to support local businesses.

In her remarks, Diaz explained how volunteers “can harness the full power of the nationwide network — we call it ‘a SCORE’.”

“Although our volunteers are based here in Chester and Delaware counties, we serve clients across the US and invite other SCORE business professionals to help our clients with specific business questions and challenges,” she said.

SCORE members can connect with more than 10,000 volunteer business professionals across the US. Support can be provided in a variety of ways, according to SCORE, including co-mentoring with local teams, sharing educational workshops and webinars on key business skills, and/or providing relevant tools, templates, articles, blogs and additional valuable resources.

“Over time, SCORE has served a growing number of clients across county and state lines who are developing and growing regional, national and international businesses and non-profit organizations,” says a press release. “Virtual meeting technology has enabled an efficient sharing model to streamline support for SCORE customers everywhere.”

The program also included a short panel discussion with four previous awardees who provided insight into the importance of long-term perspective, courage and patience required for success.

In addition, US Rep. Chrissy Houlahan, D-6th Dist., congratulated the winners through recorded comments. Awards were presented to the winning business owners, and the Chester County Commissioners and members of the Delaware County Council were thanked for their generous and continued support.
